Facebook Kills Blogs

Bloggers of the world should unite and fight against the powers of these new-fangled social networking services such as Facebook and MySpace. The energy that I would normally use to create a new blog post is now poured into keeping up to date on all the new status updates, posts, photos, and crazy Facebook apps that are out there. There's only a certain amount of free minutes in a day, and when Facebook is all finished, and a few twitters, with a smattering of random news feeds thrown in (maybe an RSS for SteepandCheap), what time do I have to create elaborate and interesting blog posts? And it's so much more work!

Is it really worth keeping up on blogging?

It's worth it if you're going to consistently have quality material posted. If second-by-second updates of everyone's trivialities is all you need, then Facebook away.

If you want to control the presentation, content and discussion, then start posting something worthwhile on a regular basis. The handful of blogs I return to on a daily basis do just that.

What you post is usually interesting, but the lack of consistency has made you a biweekly detour instead of a daily destination.

Let the Facebookers backlash.

Though I would add one additional comment- Tom, you should start a blog :) Perhaps it would encourage others.. to blog more frequently :)

I agree with Tom too, even though he's a twitterhead.

I'm thinking it's nobody's fault but your own if you'd rather spend your time reading Facebook than blogging.

I will agree that the News Feed often feels like a lot of noise and not much signal, but still I find myself able to keep up with it in a few minutes a day.

Check out the News Feed preferences to give Facebook hints on what you want to see there. The tools for customizing your News Feed could use some improvement, no doubt, but it's a start. You can also look at the feed for a single friend group. I've just started using that feature.

Also, I might disagree with Tom:

Blogs that have a new post every day tend to get ignored because I can't keep up with them. I'm much more likely to keep up with a blogger who posts less frequently but has something useful to say when they do.

Hey I forgot a thought :) Imagine that! Recently I shared an article with Kyle that was in Wired magazine, pretty much declaring the death of the blog & the beginning of something new, except no one knows what it is at the moment...

I just stumbled upon this post about something similar, and thought you all might enjoy:

Hello? Haven't you heard of RSS? No matter what social networking you do, there are a million ways to do a "one-stop" shopping technique. google reader, friend feed... ETC.

I don't know what to think, but I like reading a good blog more than I like reading facebook or myspace updates!
