Thought
It seems to me that we have killed the innocent statement. If I'm stating a simple fact that ought to be taken at face value, there is an assumption on the part of the listener that I must actually be implying something else, hinting at something other than what I have just said. Clearly I am driving at something else altogether.
But what if I just want to make a simple statement?

I think its more an issue of trusting someone as a PERSON, than whether or not you accept their words. You have to establish your sincerity first, if your listener will believe you mean exactly what you say. But you'd have to give an example; I don't totally get your argument.
What are you driving at, Timothy?
Nice.
Hey Tim Tim, I feel you... why can't things be taken at face value? Why does everything have to be construed as something more than it really is...sheesh, I mean, just because you want your own laptop doesn't mean you're going to leave your job....
I made some updates to armandomahlan.blogspot.com I know it hasn't been real happening but you should check it out, there's also a link to my myspace which is oh so new.
I think it's because a lot of times when we talk with someone we have already been conditioned to "read between the lines" so when someone makes a statement we use previously attained knowledge to process and evaluate that statement.
Did that make any sense?
Perhaps the question you should be asking is, why don't people trust me?
:)
